Controversial…..Warning….This is an Opinion Piece!

I do not believe insulin is designed to regulate blood sugar.

I believe insulin has evolved to regulate fat storage and in the process can effect blood sugar.

Insulin as a blood sugar regulator is a modern utility, completely post genetically. A reaction that we have used as a crutch and are simply burning out.

Never in our existence (besides modern times and ancient Egypt...still modern times comparatively) have we ever had to hormonally lower blood sugar. Diffusion, as in a concentration gradient balance inside and outside the cell is what governs 80% of our body's cells uptake of glucose.

Only fat and muscle cells use insulin to get glucose.....end even those cells have other transport systems for glucose.

Every cell, except red blood cells, can use ketones (a product of fat burning) for energy production with 50 times less the oxidative stress.

Like lactate dehydrogenase, the enzyme that breaks down alcohol (alcohol is new in our evolution), insulin is was not created for glucose, but as a secondary effect helps it.

Our body makes glucose as we need it and insulin is there to shuttle any extra into fat....and consequently block fat burning as it does.

We have never needed to deal with excess blood sugar. We have many ways to raise blood sugar naturally, but only one way to lower it when too high (insulin). We have limited sugar metabolism pathways and when in play they shut down longevity and disease defending genes. Our stomach has high acidity, our intestines low fermentation capacity, we store fat easily and have small sugar stores, and our brain chooses fat over sugar when challenged.

Sugar and refined carbs (grains) do not work in our hunger/thirst metabolic pathways, only protein and fat do. Sugar and grains drive our "need to eat sensation," or in other words our carb addiction cycle and work through our endorphin pathway.....which leads to addiction.

This is why sugar and grains are more addictive physiologically and sociologically that crack, heroine, or alcohol.

This is also why the entire body breaks down when there is high insulin and glucose levels over time. Heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer are all effects of sugar and insulin. Of course environmental toxins, stress, and genetic susceptibility play a role, but they are a far second.

Our poor little pancreas simply burns out from the constant demand of insulin, and our body gets fed up with continual nagging of insulin trying to do a job that it was never supposed to do.

In this case, it is moderation that is killing us. Thinking that a little here and there, some sugar treats and a bread exception once and a while won't make a big difference is rotting our bodies fro the inside out with each and every bite.

You want a reason for our degenerative health issues and obesity.....sorry folks, its sugar and things that turn right to sugar...i.e. grains and processed carbs, proteins, and chemical toxins. YES, it really might just be that simple.

You want an action step, eliminate sugar, grains and processed carbs.....and your life will change for the better, I guarantee it!

Back to your normal thinking, thanks for the indulgence if you have read this far.

1 Gram of Sugar is All It Takes to Make You Diabetic

That's it, 1 gram.

At any given moment in a healthy person's blood stream there are 5 to 7 grams of sugar....not much. By adding one gram to that amount your blood sugar reading takes you from normal to diabetic.

The guidelines for the healthy management for type 2 diabetes allows for 45 grams of carbohydrates per meal. This is why they see diabetes as a progressive degenerative disease, because they make it so. You can not reverse or manage this issue like that this way, impossible.

This is for adults folks....how many kids ate 40 grams of sugar (nearly 6 times the max amount of sugar in a healthy adults blood) at each meal or snack these last two weeks?

40 grams of sugar:
1 soda
2 pancakes and 2 tbsp of syrup
2.5 small cookies
3 candy canes
1 cup of spaghetti
12 oz of juice

Remember, kids appear metabolically more resilient because they are growing, but the impact of food hits them 3-5 times harder because of it.....even if you do not see it. AND they are molding their immune, hormone, digestive, body composition and nerve systems epi-genetically as they do so that can set their adult health stage permanently.

New Year's resolutions need to include your kids. That means you NEED to LEARN this stuff and how to do it right mom and dad. Not just do something, some fad, or experiment, but invest time, money and effort to learn WHY this is a critical time for you and especially your kids, and HOW to make this a lifestyle. Do this and the WHAT to do will be much easier.

Let us know how we can help.

We Have To Look At This Issue Differently

We have to invite in any new thinking and functional models to help slow this progression. To ignore any option that is shown even moderately effective, even observationally, is a mistake that could cost many lives and untold fortunes.

In the face of this crisis there is a bigger opportunity. You have before you the ability to shift your own thinking and standards to embrace personal responsibility and accountability of your actions and of those actions you control for your family.

With more adults in the USA having insulin resistance than not, we have to act now, you have to act now, you can not wait for your doctor or government to figure this out. At the end of the day it is not they but you who will pay the price for your decisions today.

YES, I said more American adults have pre-diabetes or diabetes than do not. 52% CONSERVATIVELY. And rising.

If you are not one of these people you just might be on your way or could become one next year unless you are actively improving your health and the health of your family right now.

You are either actively improving your health or you will passively lose it.

The choice is yours. We are here to learn and share as we are are on the same journey as you. If we can help, please do not hesitate to ask. AND if you have learned some insight along the way, please do not hesitate to share. Time is not on our side on this one, we are stronger, and healthier, together.

What Does Obesity, Heart Disease and Diabetes Have in Common According To

American College of Endocrinology
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
American College of Sports Medicine
American Diabetes Association
Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
North Association for the Study of Obesity
American Society for Clinical Nutrition
American Dietetic Association
Surgeon General's Office
American Heart Association
Consensus Panel on Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health

Insulin Resistance. A hormonal problem.

What is each of their suggested first efforts in improving these issues?

Lifestyle, namely changes in diet, physical activity, and stress management.

As for their diet recommendations, what do they suggest and mention?
Low calorie, low fat (I am not a fan)
Low Glycemic Index/load
Low total carb
Very Low Energy Diets (Pseudo Fasting)
Even high protein diets

As for their exercise recommendations, what do they suggest and recommend?
Increased physical activity
Cardio workouts
Weight lifting
Intensity training

As for stress management what do they mention?
Coaching
Awareness
Habit Change

My point my friends, what we do and recommend to people here and in our programs, either one on one or in population health, is not all that fringe but rather being noticed and mentioned by the most conventional health and medical groups in their position statements.

My hat is off to many of them for even going into some of these concepts that they would have never touched even 5-10 years ago.

Do they have more ground to cover to catch up, YES. Does this mean that the average medical doctor or health care professional out there knows, accepts and incorporates this stuff in practice, NO.

But it does mean progress and that we are going in the right direction. Join us and help yourself and help us lead this wave of advanced health strategies and opportunities!

Be well my friends!

1 in 3 Kids Will Become Diabetic

kids-diabetes

Will it be yours?

I have 3 kids..... Which one of mine will it be? Will it be any of them?

This is a prediction made by the CDC. They estimate that 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 will become diabetic. Many of them before they turn 18.

Parents, are you making your kids diabetic? Am I?

Type 2 diabetes, what used to be called adult onset diabetes, is not an infectious disease, you don't catch it or spread it like the flu. Type 2 diabetes is a condition that results from how we live our life, the food that we eat, our toxic load, stress, and physical fitness, or lack there of.

It must be genetic people say. The short answer is no, it isn't. Are there genes involved in the development of type 2 or that make one more susceptible to it, yes, but they do not cause it, one still has do the things in life that trigger those genes.

The fundamental process that causes type 2 diabetes also drives obesity and heart disease and is arguably linked with many if not all cancers.

It is called insulin resistance and it is the single most prevalent health issue seen by health professionals and afflicting our modern lives.

We must take this seriously, if not for ourselves then for our children. Moderate health changes, fleeting diets, sporadic exercise efforts and a whole lot of rationalizing will not save our children from this growing plague.

To reverse insulin resistance and the effects of it and the hope of preventing it in our children takes action, time, learning, and making a complete lifestyle change for most people. Anything less and you will be denying your children the chance to grow up as healthy as they could be and put them at risk for diabetes, obesity and heart disease, and maybe more.

We, as in my wife and I, work on this daily in our own lives, with our children, and in practice. We, as in the people and work done at ADURO Inc, research how to educate, motivate, and offer opportunity for change in these statistics, and I can say, from both sides, yes, it can be avoided.

No medication, series of medications, injections, or easy cut back diet plans, magic herbs, or meal replacements will save you from this. You have to save you and your kids from this, and you can.

I have no insightful take aways for you today, just hope that we can all take a moment and grasp the severity of what is going with this. Awareness is the first step.

Here's to being together on this journey and holding a higher standard my friends!

Test your blood sugar! Do it now!

Restoring-blood-sugar

I am working on my slides for a seminar presentation on Insulin Toxicity......metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, weight gain, obesity.....and the list of health issues due to insulin problems goes on and on and the numbers are ABSOLUTELY STAGGERING!

Buy a $20 glucometer at the local pharmacy. Start by testing your morning blood sugar after not eating over night (12 hours).

If you are under 86 you are rocking! If you are 86 to 100 that is a sign that you are on a bad path. 100-125 is the technical pre-diabetic range and 126 plus is considered diabetic.

Look.....test NOW! 93% of the people tested had NORMAL blood sugar levels and actually had insulin resistance and went on to developing type 2 diabetes in a study of over 16,000 people. 80% had a normal glucose tolerance test.

Don't assume you are healthy or fit......even if you are working out every day and eat very cleanly, test! Test today!

I can't tell you how many athletes, from competitive powerlifters, bodybuilders, olympic athletes, professional athletes, to hard core cross-fitters and marathoners, who, when tested, turned out to have metabolic syndrome or prediabetes or worse.

ALSO, I work almost exclusively with health care professionals, doctors, nutritionists, naturopaths, nurses, you name it, and when we test we are usually quite surprised with them as well.....even though they work with this daily!

Look, if your numbers are bad, there is no judgement here, mine have been bad too. TAKE it for what it is worth and get onto a plan to get better!

Don't wait.

TEST, don't guess.

Restoring blood sugar levels WILL NOT fix diabetes…

Restoring blood sugar levels WILL NOT fix diabetes or get you off the diabetic - Heart Disease - Alzheimer's disease path.

This is a hash reality, especially for the nutritionists, nutritionally minded medical doctors, chiropractors, and naturopaths and nutrition enthusiasts out there.

Diabetes is not a blood sugar problem. It is not even an insulin (hormone) problem..... as I often have said.

No, I am not changing my stance, but let's look at this:

OVERCOME-Diabetes-Without-Medications

Diabetes, as in the systemic pathological state and disease is due to a combination of the following:

  1. Liver function and structural changes: Fatty liver, glycogen inflexibility, glucagon (hormonal) feedback control issues.
  2. Pancreas problems part 1: Insulin. Insulin secretion phase one response, Beta cell damage that produce insulin, Alpha cell damage that insulin acts on and regulates glucagon.
  3. Pancreas problems part 2: Pancreatic enzyme production and secretion exhaustion/dysfunction.
  4. Early digestive track dysfunction of regulating stomach acid, the incretin response, and digestive motility (fast not slow).
  5. Systemic insulin overexposure: cellular receptor changes, cross reaction to other hormones like cortisol, thyroid hormone, and sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone).

If these 5 areas are not addressed and CHANGED physiologically, the systemic pathology that drives diabetes and causes it's many complications, heart disease, weight issues, and Alzheimer's WILL STILL progress.....even in the presence of "normal" blood sugar levels and weight loss.

READ THAT AGAIN: Diabetes...."WILL STILL progress.....even in the presence of "normal" blood sugar levels and weight loss."

Balancing blood sugar with diet, even a great diet, or with products, medications, shakes or the like, in most cases, will help you feel a bit better, look a bit better, but over time will give you a false sense of healing and security as the bigger systemic problem grows and progresses.

This is why neither forcing blood sugar into a "normal range" or just losing weight has shown to have much effect on the development of diabetes, heart disease, heart attacks, or dieing prematurely.

All of the above can be reversed to some extent and in many fully. It takes a very specific plan, time, a combination of strategies at different times, can only be done naturally, and goes way beyond balancing blood sugar.

I don't want anyone out there dealing with this issue, giving it their all, only to stay on the same path in the long run when there is a chance to get off the path and write a new map for your health and future.

We can do better my friends!

Dr. Don
